| Abstract | The aim of this study is to present the methodology that was used to generate an updated vegetation cover and land use/cover maps of the States in the Northeast of Brazil for meteorological modeling application and to estimate the soil moisture availability in the region. The Radambrasil, the IBGE vegetation maps, a digital mosaic of ETM+ Landsat 7, and TM Landsat 5 images have been visually interpreted to create a land use and land cover map. These data have been integrated into a classification system for compatibility with the types of vegetation determined by the Simplified Simple Biosphere SSiB surface model, generating a thematic map. In order to update the map, segmentation and non-supervised classification have been (ISOSEG) applied. This thematic map will be used in regional climate simulation to verify seasonal climate forecast improvement, resulting in a more realistic approach of the vegetation cover and land use of the region. | |||
